Cooking classes offered per day

Thirty students from the Beaverton School District’s Community Transition Program got a special treat at their local Safeway store just before Thanksgiving as they took took part in a check presentation ceremony and toured the Safeway store.

“We love big checks,” shared Dawn Hehman, manager of CTP. “This funding will allow us to continue offering 3-4 cooking classes a day. Student practice skills from reading recipes, shopping for groceries, purchasing food, and meal preparation.”

About 120 students with disabilities ages 18-21 attend CTP where they receive classroom instruction, life skills and job training support, all geared toward supporting independence.

“When we heard that the CTP students didn’t have the funds for their cooking classes, we reached out to the community,” said Lauren Garrett, BEF Executive Director. “We raised $5,000 from donors, plus this $5,000 contribution from corporate partners.”

Corporate support came from the Frito Lay/Quaker Feeding a Brighter Future Initiative in partnership with the Safeway Foundation.

After the check presentation, the students toured the Safeway store in Tanasbourne to learn more about shopping for groceries and got snacks to take back to their classmates.

So far, funds have been used by CTP to purchase adaptive kitchen utensils to help students with disabilities more easily practice meal preparation skills.

STEM in the classroom

BEF's Building STEAM 4 All Initiative teams up with the district and local businesses to engage students in hands-on, experiential learning. Thanks to the support of Analog Devices and First Tech Federal Credit Union, additional tech learning tools are now available to teachers through the Innovation Lending Library. This library is available to all schools across the district, especially in weekly "tech specials" taught at the elementary schools level. In January, tech instructors came together for a special morning of professional development and to learn about the new equipment available in the Lending Library.

Aloha High School Student Run Business: Doggie Dots

What started with a single social media post to a BEF fundraising site has resulted in video and television coverage, highlighting Doggie Dots at the Washington County K9 Trials and nearly $35,000 in donations from supporters around the world.

Middle School Extended Day Programs

Now in its 15th year, the Safe and Sound for Student Success (S4) program offered by BEF continued its vital work in the 2024-25 school year. Eight middle schools participated, serving 1,184 middle school students with an extended school day with access to extracurricular coupled with academic accountability.
