Imagine being a fourth grader who loves sports, animals, mysteries, science, or adventure—but when you go to the classroom library, the only books you can read independently have babyish covers, simple stories, and topics meant for much younger children. A student who reads at a first-grade level should still be able to read about space, sports, animals, mysteries, natural disasters, technology, history, adventure, and fascinating people. They should be able to hold a book that looks like it belongs in a fourth-grade classroom and feel proud of their choice.
Cedar Mill Elementary School is asking for support to build a collection of high-interest, low-reading-level “hi-lo” books for a 4th grade classroom. These books are specifically created for older students who need accessible text. They look and feel like books for elementary and middle-grade readers, but use vocabulary, sentence structures, and reading levels that allow struggling readers to experience success. Hi-Lo books will give students more opportunities to do the one thing they need most to become stronger readers: read.
