The Sunset High School Class of 1961 is proud to announce the establishment of a new fund dedicated to supporting students at Sunset High School today — and in the years to come. The goal of the Class of ’61 is to ensure that the students of today have every advantage to build upon the school’s excellent reputation.
“We were the first to walk across that stage, and we feel a unique responsibility to those who are walking across it now,” says Jim Kotchik, Class of ’61. “While we initially began with funding scholarships for seniors to help them after graduation, the Class of 1961 is enthusiastic about broadening our reach to make an impact for all Sunset students who need academic help right now. This effort is about more than just one class; it’s open to all SHS alumni who want all Sunset students to receive the same strong education foundation that we received.”
The Sunset High School Success Initiative was created with a clear vision: to support increasing the skills and capabilities of the current student body. By providing resources that help students excel in an increasingly competitive world, the Class of 1961 is ensuring that the prestige of a Sunset High School diploma continues for generations to come. Sunset alumni selected Beaverton Education Foundation as the partner to steward these funds because of BEF’s longstanding role as a trusted philanthropic partner of the Beaverton School District. “We know that graduates of our Beaverton schools hold a special place in their hearts for their community and the schools where they grew up. We’re honored to be partnering with these alumni to give back to Sunset High School and make an impact for future generations,” shares Lauren Garrett, BEF Executive Director.
The Class of 1961 may have started this initiative, but they don’t intend to finish it alone. They invite alumni from every decade to join them in growing this legacy.
