Dr. Tony Smith was selected by the Beaverton School Board as the new superintendent of Beaverton School District in early March. Dr. Smith will join Beaverton after he concludes the academic year as Deputy Superintendent of Denver Public Schools to begin his new position full-time in Beaverton on July 1. BEF is excited to begin working with Dr. Smith on behalf of students in the Beaverton School District, and we invite you to join us in welcoming him to our community.
Our enthusiasm for this new chapter stems from Dr. Smith’s distinguished track record as a champion for instructional excellence. Throughout his career, which has spanned roles from high school English teacher and principal to Chief of Equity and Engagement, Dr. Smith has demonstrated a deep understanding of how targeted, innovative classroom strategies can transform the learning experience. As Beaverton School Board Chair Sunita Garg highlighted, Dr. Smith is a “strong instructional leader with a proven record of improving graduation rates, attendance, and student achievement in reading and math.”
Dr. Smith has already expressed his desire to “look, listen, and learn,” prioritizing building trust and partnering with the community to ensure every student is supported and challenged. We look forward to partnering with him to ensure all 37,000+ Beaverton students have the opportunity to reach their highest potential. BEF board member, Dr. Andy Saultz, had this to say upon his selection, “I am thrilled that Dr. Smith is the next Superintendent. I am incredibly impressed with Dr. Smith‘s focus on students, use of data to inform decision making, and his energy. The future of BSD is bright.”
