Thanks to a social services grant from the City of Beaverton, Beaverton Education Foundation is partnering with elementary schools to provide after-school academic support for students who are English Language Learners (ELL). Programming at William Walker Elementary and Chehalem Elementary will be designed to work with students in small groups and one-on-one to help them gain proficiency in language, reading, and math.
“Every child in Beaverton deserves the chance to thrive. By supporting after-school programs for English language learners, we’re helping ensure that students and their families feel welcomed, supported and empowered to succeed,” shares Beaverton City Councilor John Dugger.
City of Beaverton funds enable BEF to expand on its proven after-school programming model and partner with educators to develop tailored strategies for their students who will directly benefit from additional academic support.
“We know that 1:1 and small group connections help develop a stronger sense of community because of feedback BEF receives after funding other afterschool initiatives,” reports Holly Van Houten, BEF Director of Grants and Programs. “Students love having a group that feels special to them and where they can be with peers who have shared an experience of speaking more than one language. Families find more connections with each other, building a stronger community outside of school.”
