Beaverton Education Foundation’s Investments: Fueling Success for Students
Friday, February 28th, 2025
Recent media coverage focused on Oregon’s literacy and math achievement statistics paint a concerning picture, but the Beaverton Education Foundation (BEF) is partnering with BSD teachers and staff to change that narrative. Through targeted math and literacy program investments, BEF provides crucial support to students, fostering their confidence and boosting their academic growth.
At Fir Grove Elementary, BEF helped provide 100 students in grades 1-5 with materials and activities for at-home math learning aimed at preventing learning loss last summer. This pilot program demonstrated impressive results: a remarkable 96% of participating students experienced no math learning loss over the summer and were ready to build on that knowledge when the new school year began. Teachers observed a significant improvement in both students’ confidence and speed with math facts after the summer program.
At Raleigh Hills Elementary, BEF funded an afterschool program that included targeted interventions and small-group instruction for English Language Learners. Not only are students making impressive gains in reading and math, they are also becoming more proficient and confident English speakers. As one teacher shared: “Students are quicker to share their thinking in class and attempt a math problem with little teacher direction now that they feel more confident. Their ability to use English in academic contexts has improved as well.”
What’s Next? BEF’s commitment to addressing Oregon’s math challenges extends beyond these pilot programs. BEF is actively working to sustain at-home math learning in conjunction with the Summer Boost program in 2025; prioritize after-school academic programs at the elementary level for the 2025-2026 school year, and collaborate with educators to develop innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of students.
BEF will announce awards for summer 2025 and extended day programs in the 2025-2026 school year next month. We’re excited to share these new programs with you!
